Rumours began circulating earlier this week that Janet Jackson will be playing this year’s Glastonbury Festival alongside Kylie Minogue, Stormzy and The Killers. The Sun newspaper say the news came from a Glasto insider, although as yet no confirmation has come from Janet nor her team.
If Janet does indeed take her place in prestigious the line-up, it will mark her first live performance in the UK since 2011’s Up Close and Personal Tour where she played three sold-out dates at the Royal Albert Hall. Previous dates for the 2016 Unbreakable World Tour were scrapped when Janet cancelled the tour to begin a family with then-husband Wissam Al Mana. The pair’s child, Eissa, was born in 2017.
Since giving birth to her son, Janet has gotten divorced, played numerous dates throughout North America on her revamped tour (now titled State of the World Tour), collected a number of awards including the Billboard Icon Award, MTV EMA Global Icon Award and many others, and was just recently announced as a 2019 inductee in to the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame. She is also rumoured to be filming a Netflix documentary and in the latter stages of recording a new album.
Just a few days ago, Janet gave rise to rumours that she has big things planned when she tweeted a picture of herself sporting a new hairstyle alongside the caption “new year * new look *”, prompting many to believe she is gearing up for something.
If Janet is indeed releasing an album this year and has plans to take her State of the World Tour internationally, playing Glastonbury would be a fantastic way to reacquaint her with an audience who may have lost touch during the years she faced industry blacklisting post-Superbowl. Either way, it seems Janet has something in store for and only time will tell what that is.
