This is probably one of the most slept on Hip Hop tracks of the last two years. I’ll admit when I first heard the song I wasn’t as in to it as ‘WTF (Where They From)’, released two years prior. We’re used to Missy singles having an obvious hook to sing along with but this doesn’t really have one and that can make it a little hard to get in to. But the incredible accompanying video has so much replay value that you cannot help but watch it over and over and with each play the song’s brilliance and innovation starts to shine through.
Visually this video is on another level compared to the work of other artists out today, but is par for the course when it comes to the kind of creativity we expect from a Missy Elliott video. For this one she co-directed with Dave Meyers and prior to shooting spent a month rehearsing because she wanted the clip to “look like art instead of just a video”, and boy does it show.
After a lengthy hiatus of ten years where Missy popped up only occasionally to feature on a track or release the odd song here and there (‘Triple Threat’ and ‘9th Inning’ were BANGERS), I’m happy to report that Missy is expected to put out a new album this year. Bring on the return of Missy Misdemeanour!
