For me, ‘4’ is Beyoncé’s best album. Whilst on the surface the theme may not be as cohesive compared to albums such as ‘Lemonade’ or ‘B’Day’, I think there is something to be said for the big, broad musical strokes that this album is painted with. As you journey through ‘4’ you can go from the unashamedly pop bob that is Love on Top, past the haunting electro soul ballad I Miss You, before landing up at the thumping militaristic Run the World (Girls). Perhaps big, not-so-subtle musical statements was the theme of this album? If so, Beyoncé achieved it with aplomb.
Another style present on the album is 80s funk and soul mixed in with a more contemporary sound to make it fit for the time of this album’s release (2011). You can hear the influence on album track ‘Party’ and bonus track ‘Schoolin’ Life’, and it’s the former that I have chosen as today’s Song of the Day.
This song just makes me want to be out in the heat sipping lemonade through an environmentally friendly straw (LOL). But seriously, this is the ultimate summer song which is why I’m posting it in winter because we could all do with a little pick-me-up at this time of year.
So grab a drink, turn your heating up, and have a party with Bey below.
