COVER OF THE WEEK: UNTHINKABLE (ALICIA KEYS) – BROCKHAMPTON

If you are familiar with Brockhampton’s music you might not think this alternative Hip Hop group an obvious choice to cover an Alicia keys down-tempo, but here they are tackling what is possibly one of Alicia’s finest moments artistically. Unthinkable (I’m Ready) was the fourth release from Alicia’s 2009 album The Element of Freedom and not only did it top the Billboard Hot R&B/Hip Hop Songs chart, it remained at the top for a staggering twelve consecutive weeks making it the longest running number one single of 2010.

During a taping of VH1’s Storytellers, Alicia states she wanted the song to sound like she was whispering in somebody’s ear, and suggests this could be the lowest and most quiet she has ever sung. Whilst not really reinventing the song musically, there is something interesting in hearing it sung by a male voice, and singer Ciaran McDonald has a much rockier tone than Alicia which further helps this version gain its own identity.
