A few years ago I started worrying that traditional R&B music was slowly disappearing from our speakers and being replaced either by a generic pop sound or harder, trap influenced beats. Case in point: Usher. Known for releasing some of the best R&B mid tempos (U Remind Me, U Got It Bad, Confessions, Burn…), in recent years he has distanced himself from the sound and adopted a more trap sound. Now I have no issue with artist’s developing their sound and experimenting, in fact I’m all for it, so long as someone is still out there giving me an old school sexy groove to play in the car.
Luckily for me Teyana Taylor is one artist doing just that. Gonna Love Me contains a sample of I Gave to You by The Delfonics and Michael Jackson’s 1972 rendition of Ain’t No Sunshine and is unapologetic in its R&B leanings. An official remix of the song was released entitled the Wu-Tey Remix which featured Wu-Tang Clan members Ghostface Killah, Method Man and Raekwon, but for me it can’t top the original version.
Watch the video below where you’ll see a brief cameo from Teyana’s icon, Janet Jackson.
