Welcome to Song of the Day where I’ll be bringing you one song every day that I think deserves your attention. Some will be hits, others will be album tracks, deep cuts, live versions, b-sides etc, but all will be worthy of a listen!
First up is Primetime by Janelle Monaé feat. Miguel.
Released in 2013, this was the first time we heard Janelle tackle a fairly traditional R&B slow jam. Ever the originator however, she did manage to keep the song very much in the lane we had grown to know and love her in by adding those very distinctive, almost Gregorian Chant sounding backing vocals that were a heavy feature on both The Electric Lady and The ArchAndroid albums. The rousing guitar solo serves to take this song to its climax before Janelle and Miguel sing us out with the chorus one last time in an effortless, almost post-coitial way.
